Shy Ann Jess Dominates Higheasterjet

Butch Southway and Paul Wood’s Shy Ann Jess ran away from his rivals under a tight hold by Jacky Martin to dominate the Grade 3, $30,000 Higheasterjet Handicap at Ruidoso Downs on Saturday afternoon.

Seven-time All American Futurity winning jockey Martin was aboard for his first stakes win since returning to race riding last month.

The Eduardo Gonzalez-trained Shy Ann Jess, toting top weight of 126 pounds, raced the 350 yards in an exceptional :17.097, approaching the track record of :17.006 set by Planet Holland while winning the 2006 Higheasterjet Handicap.

The clocking was the fastest 350-yard time of the season, surpassing the :17.138 mark set by 2-year-old sensation American Runaway in the Ruidoso Futurity trials. American Runaway returns to head the Rainbow Futurity trials on Thursday at Ruidoso Downs.

Shy Ann Jess crossed the finish line one length ahead of Strike It Quick while Chicks Got Secret was third, three quarters of a length behind Strike It Quick.

A 5-year-old son of Mr Jess Perry, Shy Ann Jess has developed into a consistent winner in the past year and he gained a valuable first career stakes win with his Higheasterjet score. In his previous out, he finished second behind Grade 1 winner Rylees Boy in the KOFX-FM Handicap at Sunland Park. Champion Brenda Beautiful finished third behind Shy Ann Jess in the KOFX-FM Handicap.

Shy Ann Jess moved up to the stakes division in the KOFX-FM Handicap after three straight allowance wins.

Shy Ann Jess now becomes the top prospect for the 440-yard All American Gold Cup at Ruidoso Downs on September 5.

Rosa Guevara’s runner-up Strike It Quick, the 4-1 second choice, came into the Higheasterjet after a third-place finish in the La Plata Stakes at SunRay Park.

Third-place finisher Chicks Gotta Secret, a 25-1 outsider, was third in a conditioned allowance race two starts ago.
