Streak Of Sixes Wins Mountain Top Futurity

Peter and Marjorie Gallegos’ Streak Of Sixes raced to her second futurity win of the still young 2010 racing season with an emphatic score over New Mexico-breds in the $254,353 Mountain Top Quarter Horse Futurity at Ruidoso Downs on Sunday afternoon.

The 350-yard Mountain Top Futurity was previously contested as the Ruidoso Horse Sale Futurity and the richest purse for the Ruidoso Horse Sale Futurity was $216,006.

Streak Of Sixes, who won the $284,000 New Mexico Spring Futurity at Sunland Park, simply went to the lead from the inside post position and steadily pulled away from New Mexico Streaker in the second post position. Streak Of Sixes crossed the finish line and expanding one-and-a-half lengths ahead of New Mexico Streaker. Strait Away Fame finished third, another one-half length back for third in the field of 10 youngsters.

The Tony Guymon-ridden Streak Of Sixes, the 3-1 second choice in the wagering, raced the 350 yards in :17.389.

A daughter of Sixes Royal, Streak of Sixes started her career at Sunland Park with three straight wins, capped by her narrow in win the Spring Futurity in a fast :14.994 for 300 yards. She then suffered her first career setback in the Mountain Top Futurity trials when she finished in third place as the 1-2 favorite.

The $122,117 first-place check from winning the Mountain Top Futurity pushed her career earnings to $274,938.

Options abound for Streak of Sixes. She could try to challenge open company in the Rainbow Futurity trials on July 8 and/or the All American Futurity trials on August 19, or she could stay in the New Mexico-bred division and point to the Zia Futurity trials on July 15.

Runner-up New Mexico Streaker won his first two starts, a Sunland Park maiden race and his Mountain Top trial, for trainer Mike Joiner.

The complete order of finish in the Mountain Top Futurity was Streak of Sixes, New Mexico Streaker, Strait Away Fame, Oh Classy Corona, Reckless Lane, Portell Regard, Merryvale, Little Bit Corona, Brooksy and Takin Chick.

In the second race, a well-stocked $11,800 allowance race, 2009 All American Futurity fourth-place finisher Favorite Cartel returned from a 6-month layoff to professionally win his prep race for the Grade 1 Rainbow Derby trials on July 9.

Jockey Ramon Sanchez hustled Favorite Cartel from the gate in good order and they went on to win with a :17.230 time for the 350 yards. The Paul Jones-trained colt was challenged by Take To The Mountain in the final 100 yards, but professionally held him at bay to win by a head. Shake Em Money Pop, second in the 2009 Ruidoso Futurity, was third in the deep field.

Favorite Cartel was the third-place finisher in the Grade 1 Rainbow Futurity and now has five wins from nine starts.

The Favorite Trick (tb) son is owned by R.D. Hubbard and Jim Helzer along with his breeders Jones and Terry Thompson.
