Red Rock Springs Wins Mountain Top Tb Futurity

The Tony Sedillo-owned and -trained Red Rock Springs held off a determined bid by favored Texas Sliver to win the $136,221 Mountain Top Thoroughbred Futurity for New Mexico-breds on Saturday afternoon at Ruidoso Downs.

Red Rock Springs raced the five furlongs in :59.25 with Mark Villa aboard to secure his second win from four lifetime starts.

Villa placed Red Rock Springs on the lead from the outside post position and they led the field  down the backside, around the turn and to the top of the stretch. Entering the stretch Texas Silver, the 3-2 favorite, made a strong bid and appeared to be headed to victory. Red Rock Springs rallied and showed his gameness throughout the final eighth of a mile to win by a one-half length.

Quick Flag made a promising late run, but came up a neck short of Texas Silver for third.

Red Rock Springs won his Copper Top Futurity trial at Sunland Park by three lengths before moving to Ruidoso Downs and finishing second in his Mountain Top Thoroughbred Futurity trial. He was third in his career debut.

Texas Silver was sent off as the Mountain Top Thoroughbred Futurity favorite after winning his two previous starts, including a dominating two-and-a-half-length win in his Mountain Top Thoroughbred Futurity trial.
