Las Especial Corona Wins Fine Loom

The quarter horse La Especial Corona held off a furious stretch run from the thoroughbred Loves Bonus to win the $30,000 Fine Loom Handicap over 870 yards at Ruidoso Downs on Monday afternoon.

La Especial Corona, ridden by Jaime Ricardo, pressed the lead through the turn and assumed control entering the stretch. Loves Bonus quickly caught horses through the lane and came up one-half length short of La Especial Corona at the wire.

A 7-year-old gelding by Strawfly Special, La Especial Corona raced the 870 yards in 45.06.

Sheet Burns was passed by Loves Bonus in the final strides and finished in third place. The 3-2 favorite Vital Winner finished fourth after blowing the turn.

La Especial Corona scored his 16th career victory in the race that was stuffed with veteran runners. The 6-horse field was entirely comprised of geldings and their average age is 7-years old.

The 2-1 second choice in the Fine Loom, La Especial Corona has four wins in his latest five starts with his sole defeat a fourth-place finish in the Red Cell New Mexico Distance Challenge two starts ago. In his previous start he fought on the lead and prevailed in a $27,500 allowance race at Sunland Park.
