Blue Memo Wins Norogor Derby
Blue Memo prevailed in a stretch battle over stakes winner Train Rider Blues to gain his first stakes victory in the $60,000 Norgor Derby at Ruidoso Downs on Sunday afternoon.
Juan Ochoa was aboard Blue Memo for the win in 1:12 for the six furlongs.
Blue Memo raced in a stalking position for the first half furlong while DG Wimbledon set the pace. Train Rider Blues rallied to take the lead in the stretch and Blue Moon loomed on the outside. After a heated duel for the final 100 yards, Blue Memo prevailed by a nose.
DG Wimbledon retained third place, three lengths behind the top two horses.
The Weston Martin-trained Blue Memo moved up to the stakes ranks after an impressive nearly four-length win against second-level allowance competition at SunRay Park. He now has three wins from six career outs.
Runner-up Train Rider Blues, owned by Freda McSwane and Joe Walters, won the Rio Grande Senor Futurity last summer at Ruidoso Downs and came into the Norgor Derby after finishing third in the New Mexico Breeders Derby at Sunland Park.
