Inseperable Wins All American Derby
RUIDOSO DOWNS, New Mexico (September 6, 2009) – Rainbow Derby winner Inseperable led a 1-2-3 sweep for Paul Jones-trained horses with a front-running victory in the Grade 1, $624,789 All American Derby at Ruidoso Downs on Saturday afternoon.
Inseperable won by a neck over fastest-qualifier Fantastic Corona Jr while Royal Proclamation completed the Jones sweep, finishing a head behind Fantastic Corona Jr.
“I’m really proud of these horses,†seven-time defending national training champion Jones said. “I knew they were all good horses, but to run-1-2-3 against this field ‑ that included Stolis Winner ‑ is icing on the cake.†Jones won last year’s All American Derby when champion Noconi defeated Heartswideopen. Stolis Winner is the 2008 world champion and crossed the finish line first in last year’s Grade 1, $2 million All American Futurity.
Inseperable raced the 440 yards in :21.096 with Cody Jensen aboard for his first All American Derby score.
“We got a great start like we did in the Rainbow Derby. This was a little tougher derby; there were a few more finishers in this race. We just beat them at the start again,†Jensen said. “That was a big-hearted race he ran. Some really nice horses came to him on the end. He just gutted it out.â€
Jensen won the Grade 1, $250,000 Golden State Derby at Los Alamitos on Saturday, August 26 with Alice K White.
Despite winning the Grade 1, $481,000 Rainbow Derby by a dominating one-and-a-quarter lengths, Inseperable was somewhat overlooked in the Rainbow Derby at 9-2 odds. Even-money favoritism fell to Stolis Winner, who finished eighth after a poor start. Fantastic Corona Jr was the 5-2 second choice after a fastest-qualifying trial win.
Inseperable has always been respected in the Jones barn since he was a juvenile preparing for his career debut. He was known for his quick start early in his training and he matured to grab his two stakes wins at the classic quarter horse distance of 440 yards. “I think he proved he’s a 440 horse when he won the Rainbow Derby,†Jones said.
The son of Separatist was third in last summer’s Grade 1, $625,000 Rainbow Futurity at Ruidoso Downs and then traveled to Los Alamitos Race Course in Southern California to qualify for the Grade 1 $1 million Golden State Million.
Jones brought Inseperable back at Ruidoso Downs this summer to win an allowance race. The colt ran a close second in his Rainbow Derby trial before scoring his Rainbow Derby win at 8-1 odds.
He won his All American Derby trial by a head over Royal Proclamation.
The All American Derby victory earned Inseperable a return trip to Los Alamitos with a berth in the Grade 1, $750,000 Champion Of Champions on December 12.
Owned by the partnership on Jimmy Harrel, H.D. Harrel, JoAnn Adams and Joe Peacock, Inseperable was a $20,000 yearling purchase at the Ruidoso Select Quarter Horse Yearling Sale. The $312,392 first-place check pushed his career earnings to $672,582.
Inseperable will join the Jones-trained Separate Bet in the 440-yard Champion Of Champions. Separate Bet is owned by the Harrel brothers and Adams. Separate Bet earned his Champion Of Champions berth with a win in the Grade 1 Remington Park Championship.
“I’ve been so fortunate this year. I told my family before the (All American Derby) that however the race comes out we are fortunate,†said Jimmy Harrel, who has raced quarter horses for 30 years. “I must say that my trainer (Jones), his assistant trainer (Lisa Saumell) and our jockey (Jensen) have done a great job.â€
Fantastic Corona Jr was a leading member of his division at Los Alamitos last winter. He was a close second in the Grade 1, $200,000 Los Alamitos Winter Derby and a third in the Grade 1, $2 million Los Alamitos Two Million.
The Corona Cartel son was pointed at the All American Derby after the Los Alamitos Winter Derby in February. He rested at Jones Tularosa, New Mexico Ranch before surfacing with a second-place run in a Ruidoso Downs allowance race on July 25.
Fantastic Corona Jr was supplemented to the All American Derby for $40,000 and then won his derby trial by a neck with the top time.
“I didn't break. I just didn't leave the gates, and we couldn't beat him (Inseperable).†Fantastic Corona Jr’s jockey Ramon Sanchez said.
Stolis Winner, the first-place finisher in the 2008 All American Futurity, finished eighth after never being in contention.
“He warmed up really good. He's been training since the trials like he was going to run a big race,†Stolis Winner’s jockey G.R. Carter Jr. said. “He kinda broke in a little bit of a tangle, like maybe he missed the break just a little bit. When he was kinda getting up out of that tangle, I caught the three horse’s (Fantastic Corona Jr)'s heels.
“It was one of those deals where he never got in his stride. He got off to a bad start and never really got into his stride.â€
The complete order of finish was Inseperable, Fantastic Corona Jr, Royal Proclamation, One Diamond Kitty, King Brimmerton, Louisianafeature One, Brenda Beautiful, Stolis Winner, Fearless Fritz and Zamron.
